Title: Outlook Express woes
Post by The_Trician on Jun 25th, 2012, 3:06pm

My email client has become mangled up somehow. Outlook Express 6 with a W2KPro op sys no longer displays email in the preview pane and I can only open messages as attachments

Also, the text is corrupted and I get odd symbols such as this –

I ran my av (Avast) which picked up a virus and isolated it, but can anyone offer any further tips?

I would backup your email .PST file from your profile to save your emails and then remove an reinstall - Ideally treat yourself to Microsoft Outlook (comes with Word, Excel etc) or opt for a freebe such as Mozilla Thunderbird.  Both can convert the .PST file as required.

Outlook Express is a very basic and easily attacked email client.

Not dealt with Outlook Express for a long time!

It's possible your .pst file has been corrupted (edit: Is it a .dbx file for Outlook Express?).

I'd make a copy then see if Microsoft have a repair tool. Caution - there are non-microsoft repair tools on the web but some might harvest email addesses or worse.

I am not sure Microsoft do a repair tool for Outlook Express, only for Microsoft Outlook.  May have to convert and then repair.

i know all of this is way fantastic stuff, but have you tried system restore , go back to a time earlier than the troubles started , and 99% of the time, it sorts out any corruption....

has worked for several progs on my W2K Pro office compy....

Thanks for the link - just tried steps for re-registering Outlook Express and registering the DLL Libraries as prescribed, but all I get in each case is "Cannot find XYZ/Whatever'. So I don't know if the files are present or not.

Gents, it seems that my machine still has some kind of 'infection'.

I tried System Restore but it didn't cure the problem.

I use CCleaner and another app called 'Cleanup' to keep un-necessary files cluttering up my HD. Have just run Cleanup and here's a cut n paste from the log.

This line -

C:\Documents and Settings\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UserData\O1QN4DIJ\pmocntr2[1].xml

comes up evan after the cleaning process.

pmocntr2[1].xml is reported by Google as being some kind of trojan or malware. I have followed some online instructions on the Trend website but it does not work. I cannot access some of the directories in order to both find and delete it. It seems that there is an MSDOS legacy element to this which cannot be seen nor accessed via Windows Explorer in Win 2K.

Looking at the flowwing list, It seems I have a lot more  C:\Documents and settings directories than I ought to have?
