why don't they colour it red/black/green&yellow or blue/brown/green&yellow?

It is designed for three phase mainly, coloured as below:

2 core :	Red / Black	\|or\| Brown / Blue
3 core :	Red / Yellow / Blue	\|or\| Brown / Black / Grey
4 core :	Red / Yellow / Blue / Black	\|or\| Brown / Black / Grey / Blue

You can get SWA in Brown / Blue / Green&Yellow, but it is VERY expensive. You can also get a 5 core SWA with Brown / Black / Grey / Blue / Green&Yellow.
