Title: RCD tripping in shed
Post by graham on Apr 20th, 2013, 2:38pm

i have an RCD with a 6A and 16A trip in my shed, its been in less than a year.i went to use my bandsaw yesterday and it tripped out.
it was quite stiff from lack of use so i put it down to that.
it still tripped out when i disconnected the drive belt.
i also have 2 lathes, one tripps but tho other doesnt.
if i connect the units to my garage unit with an extension lead they work fine.
just wanted to know if anything else could cause this before i get a new RCD unit fitted.

Is it the RCD that is tripping, or the B16 MCB?

its the RCD thats tripping, lights work fine but its seems to be hit and miss with electric motors, some work some trip out the RCD.
could it be effected by condensation,i have noticed mould spots on the ceiling board, the shed has no air vents in it.

If it is the RCD tripping, and it only happens when gumfy equipment is used, it suggests a N to E fault of high-ish impedance on the load side of the RCD.

You would need an insulation resistance tester and a sparky who knows how to correctly use it  :)

Is the RCD in the shed consumer unit?

picked up a new RCD and fitted it, same thing.
tested the sockets with a plug in tester and it said they were ok.
i disconnected a couple of sockets and everything was fine.
left one socket off and just connected the wires with block connectors and it all works.
it was either a faulty single socket (which i have not refitted ) or the wires to a double socket which i reconnected after .
