Title: Wiring for a double Oven
Post by supernanny08 on Jul 3rd, 2013, 9:45am

I have bought a hotpoint electric double oven, it says the electrical connection is 4.8Kw. can this be run on a 13amp plug or will  I need to get an electrician in to wire it up. Main oven consumption is 0.99Kwh, second oven consumption is 0.79Kwh.  It does say in the Spec oven has to be hard wired.

Not a sparky but if it says hard wired then that is what must be done.

It's very likely both sides of a double oven will be used at the same time.

4.8kW = 20Amps @ 230V

which is why they don't/can't sell it with a 13A plug and say it has to be hardwired.

You can't apply diversity to an oven like that, as Cwatters say, both ovens could be turned on at once and would immediately overload the 13amp fuse in a plugtop.

This oven needs to be hard wired, and in fact, should really have it's own circuit, separate from the hob.

You must fit a 45amp cooker wall socket with suitable cabling back to the distribution board and a 40amp minimum circuit breaker. Not the easiest DIY job if the distribution board has not got a spare slot for the breaker.

The oven is only 21amp, so a 30/32amp circuit would be fine.
