Title: Worcester Greenstar 24i Junior - water too hot
Post by Biggles on Jul 13th, 2013, 8:21am

I have a Worcester Greenstar 24i junior.  Last winter I had the outside pipe freeze up which took me a while to suss out after much grumbling and banging of said boiler. It has been working fine since. Yesterday I noticed that the hot water was nearly boiling.  I turned the dial down to nearly nothing and the water is still nearly boiling.  If I left the tap on I think it might boil. No lights on except the blue egg shaped one.  The pressure is between 1 & 2. I am thinking it is the thermostat.  Anyone else got any ideas?

Hi, the pressure gauge is for the heating.

Most likely is scale or sludge in the plate HX.

What is the mains water flow/pressurelike.

Are youin a hard water area.

How old is the boiler.

My water is very hot at the moment because of the mains temperature coming in to the property.

Thank you for your thoughts, I am really grateful.  The boiler is over a year old. I really don't know if the water is hard or soft.  Water pressure is not bad at all. Scale or sludge in the plate sounds good to me if it is that (I think).  I am having someone come to have a nosey next week but it really does help to have a few ideas of what it may be before they come.  I assumed thermostat because of the really hot water. The hard water theory sounds interesting.  I will go away and try to find out.  Thanks again.  :)

I just went onto the following site to find out about my water and apparently it is soft. It is a really easy site to use if anyone else wants to have a bash.  ;D

Plumber said that it may be the heat and to leave it for a couple of weeks until the hot weather settles down.  He says the banging is probably the pipes expanding or something.  He tried to find a dial to turn down the heat but couldn't find one on the boiler and couldn't find it in the manual.  Does anyone know if there is one on this particular boiler?  Apparently a copper pipe was fitted instead of a plastic one so he will fix that when he comes again.  Your information was extremely helpful 'the scruff'.  Thank you again.  :)

I can't seem to see my last post on here except when I try to write another.  Is it me?  :(

All 5 of your posts are visible.

If the boiler is still under warranty then you should phone WB and get them to check it.

It certainly shouldn't be banging and making funny noises.

As for the plumber saying it's the hot weather,  ;D sounds a bit like leaves on the line.

I think he thought as you did that the temperature of the mains may affect the temperature of the water generally.

No it isn't under warranty unfortunately.

Will see how it goes over the next week or so.

Thanks again.  :)

The warm mains will indeed mean hotter hot water, but not to a point where it can't be diluted with cold. Whatever it should boil and bang, that indicates a flow problem.

My worry would be whether the engineer checked the gas pressure.

Have you checked the flow rate at an outlet

Google says there is no DHW temperature control on that model. It's preset to 55C. That's quite hot. Perhaps measure the hot water temperature and see if it's getting significantly hotter then 55C. If it's "only" getting to 55C and that's too hot for you then it might be possible to install a mixer valve to blend hot and cold to give a safe  temperature at the taps.  Shouldn't be banging and making funny noises though.

Thank you CWatters.  It isn't that the water is too hot for me specifically.  It is that the water is far hotter than usual; the change indicating something is wrong.  A flow problem sounds probable.  I am still trying to find a plumber who has experience with Worcester boilers.  I will keep you posted.  Thanks again.  :)

Where abouts are you located, we probably know someone in your area.

Would still be interesting to know the actual water temperature. Perhaps it wasn't working normally before but is now.
