Title: Some people... Post by Lectrician on Sep 13th, 2013, 7:44am I have been working in a job on and off for a couple weeks in someone's home. Keep popping up into the loft. Each time I could here the boiler in the loft firing every so often. Didn't really think too much of it at first, but realised no heating was on, and no water calling (combi). Mentioned it to customer, and she said plumber says it normal, it's keeping itself warm and ready, but we do have to turn the rads off on their knobs. They also mentioned theprogrammable room stat wouldn't ever work, and plumber had replaced it a couple times, and it still doesn't work. Took a closer look, the boiler is heating the rad circuit via the bypass, as all rads closed. Looked in the boiler, they left the factory link in across the external controls, causing boiler to fire constantly. Stat was wired to mains side, this link was on the 24v side. Manual even shows to remove this link in wiring section! It's been like it for over a year, plumber looking several times before announcing its fine and meant to do it! Bless him. ;D |

Title: Re: Some people... Post by thescruff on Sep 13th, 2013, 10:28am Some combis do have a pre-heat, which costs a fortune unless you disable it. Did you check it was wired correctly for volts free or 230vac. |

A litte odd as the link was on the ELV side, not the mains side, so I guess you old miss it when you see empty 240v terminals. |

Our Worcester Bosch Heatslave oil boiler has a hot reservoir to give instant hot water, is it possible to disable this, and would that be a good idea? Our old heatslave didn't seem to use much oil through the summer but this new one (fitted in April) seems to use a lot more oil on stand by. It has vents in the top of the boiler which let the boiler cool down whereas the old boiler had an insulated top. Seems a step backwards to me and if we could stop it wasting heat it would be a good thing. |

Title: Re: Some people... Post by woodsmith on Sep 13th, 2013, 6:39pm It's a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Heatslave HE18/25 RSCF. The boiler is in a cupboard under the stairs, with the old boiler the cupboard was warmish , low to mid twenties I guess. With the new boiler it is well over 30 degrees and that is after more than doubling the ventilation. So this new boiler may burn more efficiently but, especially in the summer, this heat is just being wasted. So much so that we turned the boiler off for July and August and just turned it on if we wanted a shower. |
