Title: Wiring Chandeliers
Post by Freespirit on Jan 15th, 2015, 8:57pm

Hi guys,
I'm new on here and this is my first post so be gentle with me.
I have a question. I'm a fairly capable DIY enthusiast, but something has me beat.
Recently my daughter bought a second hand chandelier from Next from a private seller on eBay.
The chandeliers have three clear cables with silver wires, a green earth wire and an integral earth attached inside.
At the ceiling rose I am fortunate that I only have three wires, brown (live) blue (neutral) and green/yellow (Earth) but to which do I attach the three clear cables on the chandelier?
Thanks.

Each of the silver wires will be a live and neutral inside each clear cable.  There is likely as many clear cables as there are lamp holders?  One per lamp holder.

One of the cores will be earth, live, neutral.  Is there no ident on them? No thin coloured line or letters?

You will need to beep this out with a multimeter if no ident.

Don't guess, you could end up making the whole thing live.

The Next brand started in 1982ish. I can't imagine that wiring was legal in 1982 so perhaps it was rewired by the original owner? I would be very careful.

Many modern light fittings use this flex, but it's terminated into a labelled terminal block, and the inner cores are usually marked with a coloured line or dashes.
