Title: Sounds like water running constantly under sink
Post by ChrisWynter on Feb 22nd, 2015, 5:36pm

Hi!

For the past 2 weeks there's been the sound of water running 24/7 under the kitchen sink, and I can also hear it in the bathroom which is above the kitchen. There's no loss in pressure, and turning the stopcock has no effect.

Does this indicate a leak in the main pipe?

Also, from under the kitchen sink and in the bathroom I can now hear my neighbour's washing machine filling up; sounds like ssshhhhhhhhhhhhh; and really loud, which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't use it constantly. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's on 24/7. I'm wondering if they're running a laundry service and sleep in shifts to keep the machine running. :)

It's a puzzle. Not sure if I should call United Utilities or a plumber.

Thanks very much for any help.

Have you got an outside stopcock or a water meter you can check and turn off.

United Utilities or your supplier will check and possibly tell you the fault/problem, but then you'll need a plumber to make any repair.

Is there an outside tap or outhouse that may have frozen and split.

Do you have a water meter?  Perhaps turn off the stopcock for a few hours and see if the meter changes indicating water loss.

Sorry for the delay, and thanks for the replies.

I don't have a water meter. The stopcock is under the kitchen sink.

There is a tap in the outhouse--looks ok but maybe could have split underground?

I was also thinking there could be a slight blockage that's made the pipe narrower which is causing the hissing sound when the neighbour's w/machine fills up.

Looks like a call to United Utilities is in order. I'll report back.

Thanks again. :)
