Title: false ceiling/ loft hatch
Post by karljackal on May 16th, 2015, 2:08pm

I've just ripped out my bathroom and had to take down the lath ceiling.
jesus Christ the mess was unbelievable.

The loft hatch was in the bathroom, but my dad has now boarded over this- he said it doesn't look right in the bathroom. We have just installed a combi boiler so don't need access to the loft at the moment.

Anyway in one of the bedrooms the papered ceiling is sagging. I cant face pulling down this ceiling as its quite big. Would I be able to put a false ceiling in? My dad says might have a problem as one of the four walls in the room is a lath & plaster wall.

Also if it can be done, would I be able to put in a loft hatch in through the false ceiling and through the lath ceiling?

please help !!! :-[

unfortunately you need to support and cut a timber reinforce the timbers each side and tie the cut timber to the parallel timbers each side
you wont get this done without making more mess and must be done before a false ceiling

that was my thoughts  ;D
if you place the hatch where the joists have a short span you dont have to double them up just connect the cut one to the joists each side

Can you put it in the hall/passage.

If the bedroom ceiling is sagging it may pay you to take action instead of waiting for it to fall down.

At least that way you have some control of the mess. Got to be about the worst job ever.  :'(
