Title: Rebuilding a Floor
Post by bjw1992 on Jun 2nd, 2015, 9:00pm

Hi Guys, I really need some help!!

We bought a house a few months ago, and have noticed that in the slight extension that has been built, the floor has caved in.

In the extension there is the utility room and also a small toilet room. The floor in the toilet has fallen through and the utility room is starting to get that way. It looks as though moisture has weakened the wood and has caused this to happen.

I've looked online how to sort it out and it looks fairly easy. I've decided I am going to concrete it as opposed to more wood. The question really, is that where you have the toilet pipes, sink pipes etc, will concrete damage them if it's poured straight in, or does it need to be reinforced.

Cheers  :)

What depth are we talking, it shouldn't hurt the pipes although you will need to protect anything copper.

Be an idea to get a dampproof membrain in as well.

Perhaps a pic or two would be good.

I'm not too sure on the depth. There's a concrete floor underneath, between that and the wood I think there's something like 30-50cm.

Thanks :)

Are the pipes plastic or glazed

It looks like they used any old bits of boarding and timber for the floor, no wonder it didn't last! First thing is to rip it all out and see what you are left with. A properly set wooden floor should last indefinitely so don't necessarily rule out a timber floor.

Hey guys, the pipes look plastic to the eye, although I don't know the difference. I was guessing that it was timber, what's the better route to go down? I don't mind paying more for doing concrete if it means it'll last longer. It's one problem after another with this place  :-/

Looks as though the floor has been raised.

What you use depends on how the room is used, if there's likely to be water floating around then use concrete and ceramic tiles to finish it off
