Title: Blown skim coat plaster
Post by Gammy_leg on Jan 13th, 2017, 10:39pm

Hi,

Whilst stripping the wallpaper in my bedroom, I've come across areas where the top coat of plaster has blown from the layer below. Roughly 20% is affected. It's too bad to leave in-situ and will need to be broken out.
Is it feasible to just take out just the bad areas and leave the sound plaster alone, ie would a plasterer be able to blend in the old with the new?

If it makes a difference the layer below looks more like render or screed rather than bonding plaster but I'm no expert.

Thanks

It's very difficult to get an absolutely perfect patch repair and if you want perfection it's probably easier for the plasterer to skim the wall rather than fill a small patch.

I've now finished stripping the walls and have had a plasterer round to price up the job.

3 walls re-skimmed  - 2.6m x 2.3m, 1.3m x 2.3m & 0.7m x 2.3m

3 ceilings skimming over existing swirly artex - 2.6m x 3.3, 3.5m x 3.3m & 2.3m x 2.4m

All for £480 in South East.

Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks

I can't comment as I've no feel for South East prices.

But Artex?  That has asbestos in it.  Will you remember the next time you want to drill into the ceiling anywhere?

We're moving (fingers crossed) into another house with Artex ceilings. I originally thought to plasterboard over then reskim but now have decided to use that eco stuff that softens it and allows it to be scraped off without create dangerous dust.

surely it depends how old the artex is?
