Stoves back boilers radiators
May 5th, 2006, 12:17am

Planning to install hot water in a rural cottage without electricity, with a  Morso Squirrel stove with back boiler and gravity fed hot water system. Hoping to add a radiator(s) to system. Mains pressure good, traditional single floor cottage with plenty roof space for water tanks, feeder tanks.
Would probably thus be using water circulating through radiators as hot water through taps, with some kind of valve for summer time use.
Is this feasible?
Any good web sites/books? - can't find any info that dosen't include a 'pump' in overall circuit.

You cannot mix heating water with tap water.

I would consider solar panel and other green things, but depend what you want to spend of course.

surely there is some alternative type of radiator that relies on copper piping suitable for hot water rather than any sludge residue assocuiated with normal radiators. Someone suggested a type of radiator that was mostly piping with additional 'fin' like pertrusions to conduct heat into room

Like scruff has said you do not mix them.

It wouldn't take much energy to run a motorised valve. Can't you rig up a small solar panel to a car battery  something? I think you can get 12V motorised valves. That way you can steer the primary from the stove to a regular hot water tank or rads like a regular system.

Shocked

anyway, back over to the pipe monkeys Grin

we have a coal fire and back boiler setup here(farm cottage). What you need is an indirect cylinder, this uses the water heated in your back boiler to warm the water used for the H/W tap, but still keeps the two "waters" seperated.

You can't use the same water from your heating system for your Hot Water supply, and it wouldnt be a good idea even if it were allowed, once you used your hot water the heating system would be cold.

This way you can still have hot radiators even when you have used all you hot water. If your house is anything like mine (3 women) thats about 6 times a day...

using solar panels for secondary water heating is also a good idea, especially with the source being free.

How come you can't get electricity?

You should also consider that the squirrel is a small stove and having a back boiler in a stove really stuffs up your heat output, you might need something bigger.  You might also find that the warranty expects you to have it installed in an approved manner.

Our last house had heating and hot water provided by a wood burner, but with a 240v pump.  its a simple set up but you are recommended to have thermostats controlling the flow so that you dont boil the water in the back boiler, whihc can happen if you try to depend on gravity/convection feed to power rads.

Dont know where your property is, but I would consider a small wind generator and a battery bank, which could give 12/24/48v supply as required, you could then run lv lights as well.

PV always seems expensive to me for the output you get.

Concerning electricity supply, the cost of connection to grid is prohibitive. Cottage is remote in a deep gorge. Power coming in from above or below is problematic. Wind power is not really a reliant source in a gorge. Scotland is not the most sunny state for solar although worthy of consideration and the river that runs by at the foot of the garden is being investigated for hydro power but initial indications are there is not enough head. Present power is candles and gas lighting and cooking. Why not move you might say - unfortunatley the place is idyllic.
The recent addition of a petrol generator has allowed me to hoover for the first time there ever.
Wood there is plentiful hence thoughts towards wood stove heating.

I've heard about these. I suspect he doesn't have mains gas either. I've not heard of an oil CHP system unfortunately. Using LPG would be a tad expensive.

if you have a generator that runs sometimes then possiblly you could rig up some kind of battery-inverter system to provide enough power for the CH valves etc 24/7
