I need to repaint some exterior hardwoord (?) doors and windows. They were originally painted with translucent finish. About 90% of the original surface is sound and could be overpainted but about 10% has peeled to leave exposed wood. The exposed wood has gone grey/silver like oak does but is otherwise sound.
It's going to be difficult to strip the lot off but recoating with a similar translucent finish might leave patches showing through. A solid finish would look very dark brown. Whats the best way to approach this?

can you stain/polish the bits showing to the colour of the coated wood before applying another translucent finish?

mmmm in my humble opinion you aint going to get any finnish to look good as it sounds like water damage
try scraping a good bit off and see exactly what the difference is between exposed and coverd bits
you could also try rubbing down the exposed and newly exposed and see what happens
just dont think youll get exposed bits to match

Ok thanks anyway. I think I'll give it a go with translucent and if it doesn't work I'll go over it with the "solid" version of the same product.

I suggest sand it,then use an oil base primer, then sand again lightly with fine sanding sponge, then paint with an exterior oil base paint. make sure primer drys well before painting it.
