Electrics- ANSWER me this ONE !
Feb 19th, 2005, 12:42pm

without Asking the Audience, going 50/50 or phoning a friend    ???   ,
when installing a new Distribution Board C/U ,    Why    on earth are electricinas not allowed  access to   meter TAILS at  the meter POINT

REF: open up to disconnect

this is time consuming; calling supplier in to disconnect  in order to do work ,  then  to reconnect when  new stuff is installed

Cheers,
Curious

its really a case of poorly designed equipment i guess

mind you it seems theese days the recs don't give a f*** if you cut the seals on the fuse and the meter terminations as long as you aren't bypassing the meter or similar.

if you did want to steal leccy (which i don't condone or encourage) - You could drop the whole idea as it's against the law, and we don't condone such actions.

Most sparks I know (inc me) cut the fuse seal to kill the supply, fit new CU etc, connect new (over length) taild to old crappy tails via henly blocks.

We then send a REC cert via fax, and they attend site with-in a week to connect new tails to meter, and re-seal fuse. (customer agrees date and time - we do not need to attend)

The henly blocks get left on site for us to pick up at our convienence for the next CU change.

If it is a TT to PME conversion, change the the henleys for an RCD. (and leave a rod connected to the CU - it wont matter that it is there with a pme).

===============================

Thank you !

However, can one buy  “relevant components”  / tool  to reseal main  fuse after shutting supply  to replace tails for new CU?

Where  can I  get one from?   I do not want to do anything illegal, immoral or  slightly dangerous , I am not that wicked  , unfortunately Smiley

Also , when doing  a  continuity test of CPC what size  shorting lead  should be used  between  the CU phase  busbar and earth bar ?

Pls.  refrain from giving too  SAUCY  details  or providing too descriptive detail  …

Can you  enlighten me as to what exactly a henly block is?   Pls. state  the colour identification  for the  ‘strappers’  on a two-way lighting circuit  wired with  three-core  and   c.p.c.  p.v.c./p.v.c. cable

‘strappers’  is  S & M  stuff, surely !?!?

A henly block is brand name.

It is a service connector.

It is a 'joint box' for the meter tails.  Used to split or join these tails.

Strapper??  For 2 way lighting??

Umm....some people use red, some yellow.

I use yellow, and red and blue for L1 and L2.  Thats the modern, logical way.

BUT, new colours are Brown, Black, Grey.  Transpose these to Red, Yellow, Blue respectivley.

Take A look at the for reference section at the top of DIY ELEC.

Sealing tools are available, but all leccy boards have their own stamp that is pressed into the seal (often with the engineers number on it).  They also use anti tamper stickers which fall apart if you try to peel them off.
