Help please
Mar 12th, 2005, 3:17pm

If this sounds a bit vague it's because I know nothing about computers.

When I go to shut down the computer 90% of the time I get a box come up entitled :

END PROGRAM- NVIDIA Twin view window

This program is not responding, to return to Windows and check the status of the program, click cancel.
If you choose to end the program immediately you will lose any unsaved data. To end the program now click end now.

So I can't turn off the computer til I have done that.

What is it and where did it come from?

How do I get rid of it?

Please phrase answers as though you are talking to Forest Gump.

Thought so:

http://www.nvidia.com/page/home

I recommend running the windows update before doing anything else - that ought to give you any upgrade options your opsys and drivers need.

HM

Thanks for the replies.

I have the computer set for automatic updates, the only one that I haven't installed is XP service pack 2, cos I have heard it can be a bit troublesome.

What are opsys and drivers.  Embarrassed

opsys = operating system i.e. Windows
drivers = the files needed for the various bits of hardware to work. These are regularly upgraded to make the hardware (in this case the graphics card) work better.

Yes many Nvidia card support two monitors at once using S/W they call NView or TwinView

Your problem doesn't seem to be unusual if you try googling eg...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22NVIDIA+Twinview+window%22+&spell...
or
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22NVIDIA+Twin+view+window%22+

Most the most frequently suggested solution seems to be to do a driver update either using Windows Update or from the NVIDIA web site.

still go to the windows update site as setting to auto update will not install updates for things like video cards, motherboard drivers etc, those need to be manually selected from the list. choose "Custom Install" then "Select Optional Hardware Updates"(on the left)
see if anything is listed in there.

yeah download that and restart(probably)
that will at least make sure you are running the latest software for your system although it might not solve your original problem.

Successfully made the download (took about forty minutes).  Shut down and it didn't appear, so I was well pleased.

Started up again some while later, shut down and the bastard appeared again.

Going to shut down again, open a bottle of wine and possibly kick the sh!t out the cat.  Angry

roflmao, i dont think that will fix it either m8.

are you running dual monitors? if not check in control panel/display the there is only one monitor, might be hanging if its trying to close two screens but only finds one.

actually thought a bit more about that, missthekid has an nvidea motherboard and DOES run two monitors. She doesnt have the trouble, even if her second monitor(the TV) isnt connected or is disabled.  Try enabling a second monitor, even though its not in use it shouldnt affect your display, and MIGHT solve the problem.

So far the bloody thing hasn't appeared again, so won't bother with the tele yet.

Pound to a pinch of sh!t it will lull me into a false sense of security and suddenly appear.  Roll Eyes

Thanks for all your help so far guys, but don't go away, I might be back!
