port forwarding
Jul 2nd, 2005, 10:21pm

I just installed a Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router at home to take in missthekids laptop and the two home PCs. Now, I need to find out how to forward a range of ports to my PC. I have so far managed to successfully fwd port 113 for identing, but cannot get it to forward ports 1024-5000 or any other ports i specify for mIRC DCC.  All the searches on the 'net have given the same sorts of instructions, mostly for linksys routers, which just dont seem to work. I am at a bit of a loss for how to set this up properly now. I can receive files fine but cannot send.  Anyone any ideas on how to set this thing up? In the "virtual server" bit i cant add ranges of ports, only one at a time. I tried setting up 5 ports on that and set mirc for those as well, still nothing. This is going to be the big headache in my life at the moment so any advice/suggestions are more than welcome. £5 to the person who fixes it! (bugger netiquette)

I know this refers to the WinXP firewall but I suspect it may also help if the firewall in the router. It limits the range of ports you need to open - which is no bad thing usually.

If you use mIRC and windows xp firewall, you have noticed that dcc send won't work. Here is how to get it working without disabling the entire firewall :

1. First you must limit the range of port that mirc use in the Dcc, Option menu. In DCC ports , set both at 1024.
2. After, go into control panel & network connections
2. Right click on your connection and select 'properties'
3. Left click the advanced tab
4. Left click the settings button
5. Under services, left click the add button
6. For description type "DCC", for Name of IP put the name that identifies your system with your ISP OR your IP if it is static.
7. Both external and internal ports are 1024 by default and TCP.
8. Click OK and restart

well i've pretty much done all that (with the exception of opening 5 ports instead of 1, still better than the 3976 ports mirc uses by default) and the forwarding doesnt seem to be working. I know it should work since i got ident to work already, same way as above but with port 113. I'll keep at it.....

Ok this page looks promissing. It's quite technical but the last put one paragraph suggests that you probably need to configure DCC preferences to use your public IP (eg the IP address your ISP gives the WAN port of your router).

yeah have checked out my dcc settings, it really seems to be some problem with the port forwarding in the router, mirc is definately set up fine i think.
