Can you recommend a good wireless alarm system for DIY install?

From what I understand there is no 'good' wireless system.

Has it got to be wireless?

Not really. I could install a wired system - the house isn't out of the ground yet so it wouldn't be hard. I was kind hoping I wouldn't have to think about it until later on.

Avoid wireless alarms, they're shite.

You can get decent ones, but they are still nowhere near as good or as secure as a wired one, and the decent wireless ones aren't available as DIY models.

If the house isn't started yet then definitely 110% go for wired. Depending on what spec you want it might be worth getting someone in as I go to prewired alarms that are a right mess and have to have loads redone\altered to get them somewhere near acceptable, not neccesarily due to workmanship but because of lack of knowledge\experience from the DIYer\sparky that lashed the cables in.

Well if it's for new-build the DEFINATELY go for a hard wired system.  It will be very easy for the installer to first fix.

Should cost lots less than having one installed in a finished house full of kids, furniture, carpets etc etc.

No brainer really  Smiley

Forget the alarm and fit top quality CCTV Camera's instead.

The bad guys won't go within a mile of the house.

I have 3 camera's and two web cams, it's quite funny when you watch them cross the road instead of walking past the camera'

Well, I'd perhaps go for CCTV as well, but wouldn't ditch the alarm altogether. As the average intelligence level of most burglars is zero then the cameras aren't always going to be enough of a deterrent and when someone does get in they're going to have as much time as they want to rifle through all your stuff as there's no noise.

Worth putting CCTV on the list of wires to install while the house is a shell even if you don't have them fitted right away.

Tennessee:
A man successfully broke into a bank after hours and stole the bank's video camera, while the camera was remotely recording. (That is, the videotape recorder was located elsewhere in the bank, so he didn't get the videotape of himself stealing the camera).

I read about a drunk who tried to break into an off-license by using his credit card to push back the bolt. The card broke and the bit with his name on fell inside.
