Why Screed
Dec 6th, 2005, 10:23am

Sorry if the answer to this is obvious!

I am about to lay a new concrete floor to the kitchen of the house I am renovating and I was wondering why it is necessary to lay a sand/cement screed on top of the concrete base.

I am going to tile the floor so I was wondering if it was possible to do this directly on top of the concrete.

Cheers

Martin

You didn't mention any insulation?

Where will you hide all services (pipes, cables etc)?  These are usually buried in the screed.

I will be putting insulation and dp membrane below the concrete.

As far as services go, electrics will come down from above, water along the wall behind the kitchen units and the radiator will be on a wall which backs onto a room with timber floor so the flow/return pipes can go straight through the wall to the radiator.

If that's the case then no screed is required.

The reason to screed is that most of the time when new construction it is hard to get a decent finish to the concrete ie weather, animals and the odd idiot walking on the freshly poured concrete, and it is far easier to adjust with a topping if levels are not perfect.
