water hammer
Jul 8th, 2006, 11:25am

hi

to my knowledge this is caused by cold water feed pipes not being clipped correctly.  either insufficient clips or crap quality clips.

fact is i can hear my neighbours water hammer.  he has water plummed into his garage.  i have a detached house, which is built on a slope.  so the gap between the founds and floor boards is about 5-6 feet on one side.  his garage is 2 feet from that wall, so that space is probably acting as a sound chamber.

my neighbour has a particular obsession with his hose pipe Wink.  if this makes a difference.

i gave him some pipe clips, which he fitted and seemed to cure the problem initially but the problem is now back.  anything else i should be looking out for, to help him cure my problem. Angry

i was thinking of those over-lock clips.

cheers

I thought it was the shock wave caused by turning off the taps hitting sharp bends in the pipe runs.... but I'm not a plumber. There are devices you can get to eliminate or reduce this - they are called shock, surge or water hammer arrestors and have a small air chamber. You T them into the pipe runs near where the problem tap is.

I had a problem with rhythmic banging going on for 10 mins or so and then subsiding slowly. often triggered by turning off a cold water tap quickly. Found the cold water header tank for hot water ball valve was bouncing and I could see the water in the tank slopping rhythmically and sustaining the hammer. I was advised to fit an 'equilibrium' ball valve which looked very similar but must have been different inside. It worked. Peace at last.
