Gurgle
Aug 22nd, 2006, 5:11pm

Hi all
Recently when either of my two first floor bathroom sinks are emptied (They are back to back) as the very last drop of water leaves the plug hole a gurgling sound emits from down inside the trap somewhere.
Yesterday, I used a bottle of Domestos sink unblocker down one of the sinks, though they both run away ok. But they still gurgle the same!
Both sinks, the two baths and the two WCs I believe all feed into one down pipe.
Any ideas what the problem might be??

Air, or more to the point lack of.  Shocked

You need an air admittance valve on the end of the run, alternatively buy syphonic bottle traps for the basins, which should cure the problem.

The waste pipe will be undersized, should be 50mm but try the above first. Could save you a lot of work.

Thanks for the reply thescruff.
I am concerned though...
The noise has only started in the last month or so, so wouldn’t lack of air have been an issue before now? (House is approx 10 years old).
The two sinks are approx 1.75 to 2 mtrs from the main vertical soil pipe and feed into this via 30mm?? pipe/s. I can't tell if they join together somewhere under the floor? But I suspect they do as the gurgling noise is common to both sinks.
The soil pipe is plastic and not visible or easily accessible, except for a short length that appears in the loft (above the bathroom) and from here a flexible pipe vents to the outside via tile fitted roof vent.  Isn’t this where air is introduced??  Should I disconnect the flexible pipe to check air is getting into soil pipe OK (By running water down the sink/s again)??

Could the problem be a partial blockage somewhere between the sinks traps and the soil pipe?? Would this cause a gurgling to occur??

No Wolf  Haven’t got a baby!   But funny though   Grin

Could be a partial blockage, could be scale if you haven't much fall.

There's a few industrial cleaners on the market, but you would need extream care. Ask at your local Jewson/buildcenter and see what they have in stock.
