Hello, and greetings from a total DIYphobic.
My aged Mother in Law has had her boiler switched off twice in as many years by British Gas when they have called to do the annual 3 star service.
Last year it was because the vents to the outside were not in alignment (the inside one was about 4 inches to the right of the outside one and there was no connecting sleeve). She had the work done to put it right to standard.
This year the engineer says the vent is not large enough, and is against current CORGI Regulations, and switched off the central heating, putting a warning notice on it with dire warnings of what would happen if she put it back on.
He did offer to get a sales rep out to quote her for a new boiler!
As she is 81 and in very poor health she is now panicked about the lack of heat and hot water as she has the fire in front of the back boiler to heat that room, and a mainly decorative living flame fire which was a supplement to the radiators in the other downstairs room. She only has the radiators for heat in her bedroom and bathroom (as do most people I suspect - we don't all see the need for, or have room for secondary heating 'just in case')
She called out an independent CORGI fitter who could not find any vents as big as the one the BG engineer said were compulsory, and when he is supposed to have checked, the regulations don't come into effect until 2008.
Who is right, and what can I tell her? At the moment she is so scared that BG will force their way into her house that she wouldn't even ring tham if there was a gas leak.
Sorry for the long first post! You should see the size of the note I leave for the milkman if I want to have an extra pint.
