Old Boiler Playing Up (Behind Housewarmer!)
Jan 29th, 2007, 2:29pm

Hi all, I have an old boiler (Don't we all) Its behind a gasfire on the wall and it heats the water and drives 3 radiators upstairs. The fire is a Thorn Housewarmer and I beleive the boiler is a randall? The problem started 2 years ago, Pilot going out and kept going out. Gas Fitter fitted new thermo couple, Eigh! Eigh! no change, He fitted a new Gas valve, Eigh! Eigh! no change, He changed both Thermo couple and Gas valve again, in case both new were dodgy. No joy. He then went on about getting a new system (Combi and all that) and I said I would think about it, however after some very early mornings to light pilot light for bathing water one day it did not go out! and has worked perfectly ever since!! 2 yrs!! NOW last friday it went out again and I am back where I started. This is how it goes... Push in gas valve and light pilot, slowly release valve and turn knob to introduce gas, burners light and away it goes. Burners burn for about 15 mins and then shut down, and within five-10mins you hear a clunk and the pilot has gone out! I can do this several times and the same result. If I just light the pilot and not the burners the pilot will stay lit overnight, its only after a burner burn it trips out.... Any idea anybody out there???

thanks in anticipation

The boiler is the same as the fire front, Randall is the programmer/time clock.

Pilot stays on so it is not the thermocouple.

Gas valve is unlikely.

Gas pressure could be a problem, have you had any appliances fitted before/since the problem started.

Flue could be a problem has the boiler been serviced and the flue checked.

Then we have the pilot itself and is what I would have checked for blockage and alignment.

The model will be on the data plate.

Hi Grin Its started working again, I think their was some sort of contaminant on the pilot jets. I hoovered up beneath and around the front fire and as far as I could reach with a thin hose attachment (Home Made) and all is well. I am going to get a CORGI Man in to service and check it out all the same. THanks for the advice anyway.

Regards
