Backup
Dec 22nd, 2007, 8:08am

I am sitting here bored thinking that I have my Christmas shopping just about sorted now, but I haven’t got myself anything and the sales are coming  Wink

Im also thinking that I should have some kind of backup to store all the information and pictures that are on my computer
Lots of pictures that I would not want to lose if my computer died
What do you use?
Do you just put them on to a disk?
Open to any advice and opinions here

Buy an external hard drive, they are cheap as chips.

A USB one is probably the easiest for you to set up and use.

........and then download THIS.  It's the easiest backup system I know, fully adjustable to your preferences and schedules for backing up files, folders or even the entire hard drive if you want.

I wouldn't be without it.

Well you could but...

I went for a much larger box that would take two 5.25" drives. I fitted two 3.5" drives on standard adaptor brackets. It has a fan so no danger of overheating while doing whole drive images. Dead easy to swap out a drive for a larger one. Currently has two 160G drives in it. I can keep 7 nightly backups of my entire hard drive and several weeklies.

Also,  ensure that you have a copy outside of the house, otherwise if house burns so does your copy.

I used to keep a DVD of data in the boot of the car, but since having my 80Gb ipod, I defined this to also work as a hard drive.  I have something like 3,500 songs on there and a backup of all my important data and photos from the PC.  I keep this in the car also, but it has a dual purpose.

cheers

I have recently just installed a network cable and RS232 from an office block on a site to a small office the far side of the complex.  They are using mirrored servers/drives, one being remote from the other in case of fire.

Installed for the IT company who are installing the kit.

Or just keep the external hard drive in a fireproof cabinet with an intumescent seal where the cable goes through.  You never need to access the external drive so this 'could' be an option?
