Generating PDF files
Mar 18th, 2008, 5:25pm

If anyone is interested I have found a site wheer you can download a free program to generate PDF files. Not bad when you think that Adobe want some £470 for a PDF writer! I have been using quite a ot and its not bad, not bad at all.

Get it at http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

Do read the instructions though - it is not an 'executable' in the standard sense it is a pseudo priter driver with  difference. So, say, from with in Word create your document as usual then go to Print then select the 'PDF Writer' from the pick list of printers. BUT do NOT ccreate an output file (option) you wil be promted to enter a filename instead of actually printing the file. On completion yoo have a PDF file!

Used similar programs in the past, and found graphics embedded into word/excel etc did not come out very well in the PDF.  Very pixely.

Good for standard text and text boxes though.

My bro has Adobe lucky, so I pester him when needed.

Will have a 'go' Lec, but better than forking out 450 smackers even if you only use it for text. Thanks for the f/b.

You can download OpenOffice (do a search on the net), it is basically a free version of MS Office. Does pretty much everything Office does, like Word, Excel, Powerpint and you can download add-ons etc (free). It comes with the save as PDF option, which is handy when you need to send off quotes etc that you don't want customers editing etc.

http://www.openoffice.org/
I forgot to mention that it opens MS Office documents and can save as normal MS Office documents or in OpenOffice format, which uses less space on your PC.

Done a few samples of Word and Excel based files with mixed text, table and graphic elements Lec and then passed them through Cute PDF to create PDF files and they look fine in fact they print out just as good as the original.  Huh

I may take a look at the cute one then (I actually use CuteFTP).

The ones I  have seen in the past which work as a print driver have never given good results.  Maybe things have improved Smiley
