RR..there's a few mentions of similar problem in the Apple discussions group but sadly no suggestions as to a fix.

I'm guessing you've done all the usual stuff like running latest software etc.  Are you running iTunes on a Mac or a PC?  I believe that the latest iTunes versions contain the latest updates for the iPods (but there's so many variations of the iPod I can't be sure)

Cheers London. Yes I have looked on the Apple group and it seems I am not alone!

Yes latest s/w, iTunes on a Mac. I will take a look-see at the later version of iTunes.
