Tiling onto level bath ok?
Aug 5th, 2008, 9:36pm

Hi

I would like some advice about tiling around a bath tub/shower.

Is it acceptable to begin tiling along the top edge of a bath that is already level? My reason for asking is that I have seen video clips of tilers using a horizontal guide battern that is fixed one tile height or less to the wall from the top of the bath and was wondering if it can be done without fixing a battern to the wall and just using the bathtub as the level line?

Regards

JJ

i am assuming you are trying to make the job easy and run a full tile around the bath top!!!!

if the bath is 100% level around the rim ok but if it wanders out by say 5mm
you have to remove a greater amount as you go up to 5mm or try to add progesivly thicker slithers up to 5mm

ok you think follow the bath edge !!!! well no the part/full tiles at the corners will be on the slope

best aim for 50 to 75 percent tile cut on the bath then you wont notice any deviance Wink

What he said. The bath has to be really level. The hardest thing to do is cut thin strips of tile so always plan ahead and arrange for all cuts to be approx in the middle of a tile.  That might mean centering a tile horizontally in the middle of the bath so that you have to cut a tile at both the head and tap end. Better that than be trying to cut a 1cm wide strip.

And assuming that you're going to seal the tile/bath joint with silicon rubber, remember to fill the bath first with water to weight it down. That way the silicon give a better seal.

And don't empty the bath for 24 hours minimum after siliconing.
