New radiators?
Jan 23rd, 2009, 9:58pm

Do I need to have new radiators fitted when having a new condensing combi boiler fitted?  The radiators are old, have two pipes feeding them and no thermostats fitted.

Not unless they are damaged, the wrong size, inefficient, rusty... If they are full of sludge then getting them power flushed could cost nearly as much as replacing them (assuming you don't have loads of radiators and your plumber is charging you a reasonable price).

They will need thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) fitted to them though, which are anywhere between £15 - £40 each, excluding fitting.

I am sure one of the plumbers will be along shortly to give more professional advice...

If you have a room stat and are otherwise happy with the way the system performs I don't believe you need do anything to the existing rads.  TVR provide better control over room temperature but I don't think they are essential if you have a room stat somewhere in the house.

Flushing the system is recommended when fitting new boiler. Remember to put corrosion inhibitor in after the new boiler fitted.

I'm not a professional plumber though.

Last time I checked  the building regs, you had to fit a TRV to all rads on a new system/refurb?

You may be right. Haven't looked at that section for ages.

Looks like you are right, this guide says..

http://www.maxgas.co.uk/building%20regs.htm

Quote:
TRV's or Thermostatic Radiator Valves must be fitted to all radiators apart from one located in the same room as the room thermostat.

However while looking for that I also found this...

http://www.inspiredheating.co.uk/controls.htm

Quote:
If you have a condensing boiler then do not fit too many TRV's, usually no more than a third of all radiators, as they will reduce the high efficiency of the boiler.

Presumably because if too many rads shut off then the boiler may start cycling - particularly if it was an oil boiler.

Depends on the age, but new radiators are much more efficient than the very old ones.

The minimum requirements for a new boiler is TRV's on at least the bedroom rads.

However if you read it really closely, it's a recommendation, if you're on a tight budget don't bother.

Consideration must be given to the existing pipework and radiators, if they are not being skipped, then they should be pressure tested, and flushed, you can flush them out down the garden with a hose pipe.
