Paint sprayers for fences
Feb 25th, 2009, 7:39pm

I've got about 400 meters of post and rail fence that needs treating. Would normally go for Creosote substitute and a brush but it will take ages.

There are lots of sprayable products around in the DIY stores now but are they any good?

Are there any pump up sprayers that can be used with Creosote substitute or will it just knacker the washers in short order?

Any suggestions welcome!

Have a look on youtube for HVLP sprayers. There are loads of different options/makes/models and most don't have any rubber washers in them, they are more like conventional spray guns.

I suspect that the pump sprayers that you mention will soon get boring and you may need to take it in shifts to pump them.

I bought the cheapo manual pump sprayer from B & POO (about £15) and it worked a treat. It does need pumping by hand but not as much as you would think(less work than a brush!).Only slight drawback,as with any sprayer,is you go through a hell of a lot of paint/stain.Worth a go for the price,i did try an electric spray once but after a few minutes my arm had gone numb with the vibrations!!
400 metres......good luck  Grin Grin Grin

I've got to do mine this weekend, although it's not anything like 400 metres!!

I've hired an electric compact sprayer from a company called Brandon Hire.

My mate says it's the fastest way and I don't want to be doing it all weekend.

Not done yet. Meant to be stick building a shed and installing a gate first.

PS. Ronseal say their sprayer is compatible with all their Sprayable paints but apparently NOT their "Multi-purpose Wood Preserver" (which their web site says can also be sprayed). Seems that Sprayable is not the same as sprayable - amazing what a marketing dept can do do with a capital letter.. Smiley Still at least they responded quickly when I asked the question..

Quote:
Dear Mr Watters,

I am sorry to say the Multi-purpose Wood Preserver is not suitable for use in any of our sprayers.  The Sprayable range is a specific group of products named accordingly. For example Ronseal Sprayable Fencelife.

If you wanted to spray the product you would need to find a sprayer with Viton Seals.

You used to be able to get a spraying attachment for vacuum cleaners, reverse the 'suck' & connect the hose to the spray 'jar'. My Dad & I used to use this for spraying pebbledash walls (and doping model aircraft), it didn't need Viton seals as there weren't any seals! Worked for us (& he was a senior shop sprayer for Vandem Plas, spraying mostly Princess's used by VIPs & Royalty).

Ah those were the days. Reminds me of the man who walks into a sewing material shop and asks for some silk. Shop assistant asks what it's for and he says he plans to "wrap it round a model and paint with dope".
