Stain/preserver for sawn timber

I'm looking for recommendations for makes of stain/preservative for use on external sawn timber cladding. I'm thinking something akin to barn black or creosote than Sadolins. Ideally in a range of brown colours as the planners want to approve samples.

I would think you are better off with a spirit based stain such as;
http://www.ronseal.co.uk/products/product.jsp?id=54
rather than a water based finish which will sit on the surface and look less natural.

Yes thanks thats exactly the sort of thing. Want it to penetrate rather than coat the surface.
