replacing ground wire (Read 3176 times)

melledge GDPR opt-out	replacing ground wire Aug 6^th, 2009, 2:08pm I have a number of outlets at my new house that do not have a ground wire connected to them. What is the best way to add this ground wire to the outlets since the outlets are already wired?

Eh? Can you describe EXACTLY what it is you think you don't have?
Are you talking about the ground between the actual socket & the metal box?
Or do you mean there is no earth on the ring ?
Is this in fact a ring or a radial?

When you say grounding, I assume you mean earth (you are in the UK arn't you?).

The terminology would suggest they are American, although they could be using an American book/website for their terminology Huh

Hopefully there is an earth/ground wire in the cable, the sheath can be cut back to expose the earth/ground, then a short lead can be connected/crimped to the earth/ground to connect to the earth/ground terminal of the outlet/sockets.

However if you find one earth cut back then IMO you must inspect/test (including ring continuity if the sockets are on a ring) to ensure that you have found all the occourances of it. If someone has made such a bodge once there is a good chance they have done it more than once.
