Electrical Circuit Problem
Mar 3rd, 2010, 2:50am

Hi Folks,
I'm trying to replace a ceiling light with a chandelier the wife bought.. The wiring is simple.. black on black, white on white, and hooked the 2 grounds together..

Now the thing that I don't get, I put a light in the chandelier to test it and the light lid up as I was screwing it on, so I thought I must've forgot the switch on.. so I turned the switch off and tried to screw the light on again, and the same thing happened.. the light lid up as soon as it touched the light socket..

I thought the switch is faulty, I took it off the wall and it doesn't look like it has a fuse in it.. I replaced it with another one.. same thing.. it doesnt break the circuit and the light is lid up continuously  Angry

I'm not sure what's going on.. the switch with the previous light was working just fine.. I disconnected the chandelier all up and connected the previous light fixture and tried it, and its still doing the same thing.. no matter if I turn the switch on or off, the light is lid up..

I remember when I was putting on the chandelier base (metal one), the wires (black and white) both touched the metal and the circuit shorted which caused the particular fuse on the main fuse box to go off.. which I kept it off until I was done with the wiring.. is it possible that this little incident caused something??

Can someone please help me out here.

mostly appreciated.

Cheers

It sounds like you are from outside the UK, so our advice and knowledge will be limited.

Is that the only cables that are at the fixture?  No other tucked in the back?

If you shorted the cables out there is a chance the switch has been damaged - I am not sure from your post, did you actually try replacing the switch?

A photo of in behind the light fitting and the switch may help.

By the colours I am guessing it is in the States somewhere?
How many cables come out of the ceiling, if it is just one black, one white, and ground/earth then the problem may well be the switch. If there are 2 black, 2 white and 2 grounds/earths then they should not be joined together as one set will be from the switch and one will be from the mains.

PS make sure the lighting circuit is switched off before working on it!

It's in Canada.. Sorry, I didn't notice that this was a UK fourm.. Anyways, got it to work just now..

It was the bundled white and RED.. not the black.. So, was quite pleased with myself Smiley

Thanks for the help anyways  Smiley
