Perhaps faulty thermostat? When it was working did the light normally go on and off as the thermostat kicks in and out?

thanks CWATTERS. I should have said that there is a wire hanging down fromthe hob. I did not disconnect it from anyhere; assumed that is how its always been. Also, the ring at rear of hob not working.
Yes, that light was nomally showing previously

Only way to fault find this sort of thing is to disconnect the supply, and strip it down enough to follow the path electricity takes around the system. If there is no obvious visible fault (like a disconnected wire) then get your multi meter out to check for continuity and figure out where the problem is. Elements, thermostats and switches all prone to failures to some degree.

tthanks for that . A wiring diagram would help if I had one. I have spent my working life in electronics so I suppose that I should be able to work it out. But I am concerned about this loose wire. By the way, this cooker belongs to my daughter about 5 miles away which is not very conveient

Google found this thread which suggests the ring and oven faults might be related...

and also this post..

Just a brief word of warning to anyone thinking of buying any 335 Belling cooker - I have barely had this cooker two months and, despite it being perfectly maintained and looked after, it has broken down TWICE already. First time the one hob and the oven stopped working - it was due to a "common problem", where the thermal switch inside the cooker cuts out due to the oven having a fault where it sometimes fails to switch off at the correct temperature, so I am told.  Second time, the front hob stopped working, which is therefore due to a different problem..continues

That sounds like a faulty thermostat trips a thermal fuse.
