Wiring in/around a chimney
Oct 25th, 2011, 9:47pm

Hi folks,

I am looking to add some sockets the other side of the downstairs living room chimney breast where there are currently no sockets. I do have a double socket on the one side of the chimney. My problem is extending the wiring to the other side of the chimney.

The chimney is currently open but we intend to re-fit a victorian fireplace which will hopefully be in use. The living room is tanked so I can't take it under the floor.

Is there any way I can get the wiring through the chimney? The main problem is the possible heat from the open fire. Can I put it under the hearth or is that too close to the fire? Can I put it at the back of the opening and case it up. What are the rules??!

Thank you very much!!

Keep away from the fireplace.

Can you not come from above?

What sort of tanking has been done?  Are the walls rendered over the tanking or studded off?

You could put micc under the hearth, but it does require special tools and training to make the terminations.
