i've got a plug in rcd that i use when i'm working in the garden (hedge cutter etc) that i would plug in before the extension lead.  now that i've had the new consumer unit fitted do i still need to use it?

Assuming your new consumer unit has been fitted correctly, giving RCD protection to sockets (not just MCB), then yes, you can ditch the RCD plug.
