Fitting bathroom vertical standpipes/shrouds
Nov 5th, 2013, 7:53am

I admit defeat!  I can't see how this can be done without ripping down the ceiling underneath.  But there must be a way surely but how?  Need to fit a pair of standpipe shrouds similar to these

...

What is foxing me is how you make the bottom connection (arrowed).  Options are:

1) Copper right angle and solder?  But the length of those elbows means it will hardly appear above the tiling. I'll be blasting a flame straight at the underlying ply supporting substrate...surely not a good idea.

2) Ditto compression join.  The elbow is going to be too short to stick above the tiles to get a spanner on.  Or are there special elbows with long legs designed for this?

3) Hep2O push-fit.....how to get support underneath the elbow to resist the downward pressure as you push the vertical pipe in.  Can't see how.

4) Remove ceiling in room below.

Not helped by SWMBO saying 'shouldn't we get someone in'....grrrrrrrr   Angry

Whoever designed those things should be shot or made to fit them.

Only way I found is make them up first screw them down then make the connection away from the standpipe and hope it doesn't leak.

But to make them away requires a way of getting them in place before the tiling.

If you have 'difficulty' then I don't feel quite so bad!  Looks like it's ceiling off time.

Some of the stuff is nearlly impossible to fit and God help if you have a leak or problem.

There's a cast iron bath with a solid side panel, only way to connect that is from below.

Over on another forum, this has been suggested. 900mm long 22mm flexi tails although I am waiting to see if the compression nut will go through the shroud.

Or a short length of pipe (which will be part of the horizontal run) fitted to the pipe going through the shroud, feed that short bit through the hole in the floor and then where the standalone bath is going have a large oval hole and make the connections there.

You need a trap in the floor or ceiling, I certainly wouldn't use flexibles for future security, or connect and tile.

I must be missing something. Can't you fit the bend and the length of vertical pipe (say 12") before you lay the floor?

No because the shroud is too narrow to connect a longer piece of pipe to continue in the vertical direction.  There is only just enough room for an end-feed connector (without any solder dribbles!). Plus not enough wiggle room underneath to have enough spare to connect at the top (also a solder connection) without damaging the shroud.

Ah ok. What a pain.

We built a false wall and went for wall mounted taps and spout for our free standing bath.

Could you not make an oak shroud to cover both pipes and ditch these altogether?

I could but try telling SWMBO.  Anyway, I have the solution as suggested by JasonB over on UKW.

Had to smile when researching 'full-bore' 22 mm flexis.  They claim a 12mm internal diameter.  Full bore?   Yeah, right!
