The original idea of this regulation was to force you to insulate to a minimum standard if you are going to be insulating anyway.

The problem is they classified render as an insulator. This can make it very expensive to re-render a solid wall. You might have to add exterior wall insulation as well as the render.

In some cases a neighbour might not be happy to allow you to "steal" a few inches of their garden for external wall insulation.

No, it's not planning but yet another example of bloody stupid building regulations.

If you want to re-render or replace timber cladding to external walls, building regulations may apply depending on the extent of the work.
Where 25 per cent or more of an external wall is re-rendered, re-clad, re-plastered or re-lined internally or where 25 per cent or more of the external leaf of a wall is rebuilt, the regulations would normally apply and the thermal insulation would normally have to be improved.

Why are they so effing stupid? So you have a property that possibly has cracks in the render and so penetrating damp inside.  You want to take care of your property and sort out the problem.  Then along come these stupid ******* ***** who want you to spend thousands and thousands.  And for what?  Sweet FA

My daughter was planning to get her privately owned house re-rendered, she has found a local contractor to carry out the work. However, she was unaware that the LA want a fee of £183 for planning regulations. Is this normal?
