Aug 12^th, 2004, 7:14pm Just about to fit a new kitchen The new sink comes with 40mm waste pipes, yet the local trade suppliers only stock 43mm and the DIY store 40mm. ??? As I also need to install new waste for the WM & DW should I use 40 or 43 8) Will one supersede the other in time Thanks Dusty

Until someone shows me otherwise, they don't make 43mm.

11/2" is classed as 40mm, 2" is 50mm.

Some confusing exists because some makes measure inside and some outside, and some vary slightly in size, for example the push fit stuff is smaller than the solvent weld.

For your kitchen depending on the length of pipe run 40mm should be ok although I prefer 50mm and reduce the branches top each appliance.

You didn't read my first reply, They don't make 43MM or at least not in my teritory.

Solvent is 40mm push fit is slightly smaller.

A compression fitting will in most cases convert the various pipes.

I�m still confused, yes the pipes say 40mm on the side, however I have 2 sections in front of me and a pair of digital venire callipers
One is made by Marley BS 5255 � OD = 43.01mm ID = 38.59mm (came from the Plum Center)
The other from Homebase � OD = 40.86mm ID = 35.87mm.
In addition to this, if you buy a 90� elbow from the Plum Center you will see it has 43 (1 �) on it.
Although they may call the tubing 40, they clearly do make a 43mm size.

Plumb brand, Terrian, Marley and a few other solvent weld are all compatable, the odd ones out are Rimway and Bartol.

To confuse the issue the pipe is an id size ie, 32mm & 39mm and are sized to fit the old 11/4 and 11/2 pipes.

McApine traps for example are sold as 39mm for 11/2, Terrain are .15 and .125 11/2/and 11/4 repectively.

I have noticed on a new bag of plumb bends that they are marked ABS 40mm, on the fittings in the bag 43mm (11/2) they are however listed as 32 and 40 and sold as such.

All you need to do is this, either buy a pushfit universal coupling, or a universal compression coupling, or if using solvent weld stuff, heat the pipe or smalller fitting up with your blowlamp waft the flame over quickly until it is pliable being careful not to burn it, then either open up the smaller fitting by forcing in the pipe or open up the solvent pipe by forcing anothe peice of pipe into it, then solvent together. Wink

keep the blowlamp away from the tin of solvent, whhoooooooofffffff.

I've just come up against the same problem.
@ thescruff: it might have been 6 years ago but your advice to the OP was a bit lacking: he measured his pipes with a digtal calliper and gave the BS info which you ignored. In 2001 a new standard came in for small pipes replacing BS5255 with BS EN 1451-1. The fact is that the actual OD size [as opposed to the nominal size] has changed from 43mm to about 41.5. Osma have kept all the same part numbers but the new are not compatible with the old except via a universal adaptor.
