spray on insulation foam
Oct 3rd, 2011, 1:23pm

thinking of insulating under my floor for the winter,

there is about 3/4 meter underneath my ground floor/living room ect
some one told me that you can get spray on insulation foam, like expanding foam stuff,i was thinking if i can get it  i can spray it onto the underneath side of the floorboards and into the gaps to help drafts

any ideas on what its called,it would need to be put on with a decent machine, not the crappy tins

thanks for the help

There are lots of companies that offer spray on insulation but I'm not aware of a DIY method. Normally it's promoted for lofts and for that application I wouldn't touch it.

The normal method for insulating a floor is to fit Rockwool batts using a net for support or rigid insulation resting on battens. Normally the void below the insulation has to remain ventilated.

One solution I've seen proposed elsewhere is to fill the floor void with  coated polystyrene beads normally used for cavity wall insulation. However this stuff isn't approved for that application. There are also concerns this might bridge the DPC and over how to ensure the floor cavity is fully filled.

At the moment B.C.O's are spec-ing Cellotex (110mm thick) "XR4000" for between ground floor joists, of the raised variety..... having to add it to the new extension we are building...just cut 5-6mm over width and push fit!!!!

dj-paul...you don;t have an open fire in the room, I assume, otherwise you might find it won't work that well after you've sealed up the floor!

i had ment to put it was like an expanding foam so i could go under the floor and spray the underneath of the boards,

the rockwool slabs id think im my mind would be better than the kingspan/celotex ?

bottom line tho,the cost of the material would be a fair bit, + time to do it,theres 40+ square meters under the floors,
would it be worth it,how much would it help any draughts/cold in the winter ?

On the whole, i would say that any insulation that you can add to an area will help reduce a house running costs.

The spray foam insulation you talk of is common in America and Canada but I have never seen it in the UK.  It requires specialist equipment to apply so would not be a DIY job.
