Power Pro Mitre saw

Hi All
When building my kids playhouse recently, my present of last year - a Power Pro mitre saw had extreme use and very useful it was too. On the last couple of cuts it slowed and made nasty smell. Upon investigation the brushes had worn out completely and the wire going to the brushes goes via a Ferrite core with 8 turns round it. One of these cores had shattered as well.
Replacing the brushes was simple enough but the core does not seem to be easily replaced. I ran the saw and it works but is a bit smelly and there is a load of arcing visable out of the back of the motor.
Now is this a case of get what you pay for (£50 I think) and bin it and be thankful the project was completed before it died or can anyone help me with why it is still poorly.
Cheers
Gareth
