Regs?
Nov 12th, 2004, 9:03pm

Evening all,

For sparky work you have the 16th edition/onsite guide,  is there an equivalent for building regs as I am starting out (only doing property maintenance and small stuff to start with) I dont want to be making any unnecessary errors.  I understand much comes with experience but someone must have got the formule for calculating lintel sizes etc. from somewhere Smiley  I have turned down jobs which I think would be wrong or sound a bit 'Yee Ha' but would like to explain why with a bit more conviction and offer the best possible alternative.

All help appreciated

I’m sure there’s guides to the building regs to help interpret them..  Roll Eyes

There is a book called "The Building Regulations - Explained and Illustrated"  This is well worth buying.

Make sure you get the 12th edition

The lintels are not specified in the regs unless they are specific and for purposes beyond the standard use.  Go to catnic.co.uk and they will be able to offer info on all types of lintel and they are the standard by which others are measured.

In some cases where the lintel differs then the drawing and/or spec may state "confer with engineer" or "engineer to specify" or something along those lines.

Be aware of thermal bridging when using lintels.
