Isolating a broadband connection...?
Jan 17th, 2005, 4:08pm

Gents -

A query,
I run W2KPRO with a broadband router.
Now, to disconnect my broadband, is it ok to just right-click the 2 little monitor icons on the taskbar and hit 'disable', or should I really turn off the router via its mains switch to make sure?

I don't want to leave the thing connected overnight inadvertantly, thus using up my monthly allowance without realising it!

TT

What monthly allowance? You must have a cheapskate broadband supplier!

The bandwidth is only used when your PC is actually doing something, like surfing the net. Just having the router switched on isn't going to do very much. There will be some pings and similar going on all the time but they don't add up to much - it's when you download the naughty video of Pamela Anderson that your bandwidth goes up (and it might not be the only thing that goes up.... Wink).

1Gb a month isn't so bad. I see about 1/10th of that on my web site each month with all the visitors thumbing thru the pages.

It's only when you get downloads cracking away that 1Gb/month becomes a problem.

Might pay to shop around a bit - sticking a limit on a broadband connection is a bit offputting.

yeah i agree, i went with BT because they were offering it at a decent price, it went on my phone bill and got paid along with it, and they didnt have a d/l limit(which was the clincher).
Had broadband for about 2 months when they wrote saying they were introducing limits!!! baskits.  I will be moving to tesco broadband very soon £19.97/month for 512 with no d/l limit, plus you get free installation and modem, 15 email addresses and 50 meg of webspace.

Well I would pass you the URL, but to be honest it has been looked at so often that it's looking a bit tatty round the edges..... Wink

Telewest do a number of connection options.
Surfunlimited for constant dialup connection. £14 plus extra £10.50 as phone line must be rented.
256k broadband. £14.99 no extras
1mb broadband. £19.99 no extras
2mb broadband. £35 no extras
4mb broadband. £60 no extras
Special offer. 1st month free on 2 & 4mb
The 11, 2 & 4 mb service are double the speed they were a year ago for no price increase.

It looks as if they have stopped the Pay as you go at local call rate.
