what i want to do is put several clips together into one and put a sound track over it

i thought the only way you could do it was to seperate the scart lead[multi adaptor kit] feed in the video signal and play a seperate sound track to one or both of the sound channels
you could even use a microphone to put your own commentry on

although i am talking vhs recorders Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Wink

I've got Pinnacle Studio (or something like that) It came free with my pc.  Never used it but I had a 'tinker' and it looks interesting.

Our vid camera doesn't work (lost the charger!) so I lost interest in it.

xp comes with one, windows movie editor. dony know how good it is but it probably does what you are looking for.
