Another Part P question
Feb 16th, 2005, 10:42pm

A friend is planning to have an extension built. He intends to use his brother to carry out electrical works. Brother apparently has 16th Edition. Is he able to self certify? From my trawls round the many forums I said that he could not. Am I wrong? ???

No - Yes - Damm - You're right SB - Unless he intends to notify building control / get them to certify.

As BC will be involved he is under the impression that as long as he notifies them then that is o.k. I don't know what our local BC has in place regards Part p and have suggested they find out. His brother has told him that he just has to get the electric board in to sign off the work. I have met the brother (iffy) and I don't want to see this couple go down a path that may ultimately lead to unbudgeted for extra expense. Will have to hope BC give sound advice.

The only people able to self certify are those who are registered with a Domestic Installer Scheme.

However anyone can install the leccy work but you have to notify the BCO prior to work commencing and have the work inspected during installation and then it must be tested by the BCO's department. If all is well you will be issued with a certificate.

not unless he's self certifying under a self-certification scheme  Roll Eyes

Yes, I should have said a "Competant Persons Scheme" but it's surprising how many of the training colleges are now calling their courses "Domestic Installer Scheme" even though they are nothing to do with the NICEIC.

It seems "Domestic Installer Scheme" is a very descriptive term and does describe all the schemes.

Unfortunately NICEIC seem to have made that description their own brand  Sad
