Gas fire back plate?
Apr 18th, 2005, 7:52pm

My dad has replaced his gas fire which came with a metal back plate. In the instructions he said the cut out slot at the bottom of the plate should be taped over unless the gas pipe is going through the slot.
Is this right as i thought the slot at the bottom should always be open to draw air up the stack to expel the fumes. He has taped over it as the book said

did you read the instructions yourself?

If the book said its ok then its ok i guess, the whole plate should be sealed off usually anyhow, the air to draw the fumes up comes from the combustion and the convection inside the flue.  Don't worry bout it, and keep it taped up Wink

Why don't I like the sound of this.

Best advise is not to use the fire and phone the manufacturer

Yes best not to mess about if you aren't sure. If gas fires don't get enough air they tend to kill you.
