DIY electrical work & the law (Scotland)
Jun 26th, 2005, 10:51am

Hi. In Scotland, am I allowed I move sockets, install a new range cooker and fit low voltage lighting on a DIY basis? I know it's probably SMARTER to have a qualified sparky to do it, but the £1100 I have been quoted is just way out of my league!

scotspark, thanks for the info. Actually no, I'm not confident, but what can you do? When you guys are so busy that just getting someone to quote is almost impossible, and then when the quote comes in at a price I can't even imagine affording, I'm left with no choice. I know it's market forces, but at the end of the day, if folk can't afford to pay the going rate they have no choice but to try it themselves, regardless of how hamfisted (that's me!) the final result may be.
As an outsider, I think these P regs in England will just make Sparky's more expensive and therefore more people will try to do things they shouldn't (like me, for example). Will the result be the OPPOSITE of what the Government says it's trying to achieve?
