Satallite / TV / Phone
Jul 13th, 2005, 10:36am

Hi all - not sure if this is in the right section?
I want to hard wire some flush TV / Satellite Sockets and phone point  in my front room, dining room and bedrooms. I was hoping some of you could guide me through the best ways to do it - I have read some threads that say you should cable everything up to a central point in the loft? is this the best way.

I have found the following items: but was unsure the best way to connect the individual sockets together.

also - is there a tester you can use to check that the wiring is ok?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Pretty much as you say, just wire each point back to a central point then you can connect each room to whatever you want.

For the satelite sockets there is no need to have one in every room unless you specifically want a digibox in every room. If you just want the satellite signal to be redistributed round each room then I'd use something like this. I've used this a few times in the past and it keeps it neat and works well for a basic redistribution from one digibox.

As for the phones, I've used mainly Cat5e cables in my house and this is becoming a more common occurence with the more widespread uptake of home networking. This is quite a bit more expensive than just wiring a few phone points together although it can be used for phone or data services. You would need to run all Cat5e cables back to a central location and terminate them into a patch panel in a cabinet, which is where the expense comes in. If you want to look at swapping over to having a home network in the future you could wire al the phone points with Cat5e cable and use the standard phone sockets and connect up in the same way as you would wiring it with normal CW1308 phone cable. You could then just change the outlets for Cat5e sockets and reterminate the cables into a central cabinet at a later date. If you were to wire them in CW1308 type cable then there is no real need to wire them to a central point, you can just loop from one point to the next originating from the master socket.

As for testing the cables, I have several hundred pounds worth of test equipment for phone, data and TV systems, but I feel that could be a little excessive for yourself. All you really need to do is check to make sure there are no shorts on the co-ax and that the cables are correctly terminated. You could quite easily achieve this with a multimeter. If you went down the Cat5e cabling route you can buy a wiring termination tester for around GBP30-40.

Try this FAQ...

http://www.home-networking-online.co.uk/acatalog/CRIS.html

See "What cables do I need"

They recommend running cables Cat5e and coax from each room to a central point where you locate a cabinet containing a TV distribution amp and a hub/router (if you are installing a LAN). The cat5e can be used for LAN or phone.

If you don't want sat boxes in every room one solution is to put the sat box in the living room and run an extra coax back to an input of the distribution amp. That way you can watch sat in any room - (but you all have to watch the same sat channel!). See their TV link device to contol the sat box remotely. This sends the IR signals back down the coax through the TV distribution amp to the sky box.

For the future - think about Windows Media Center PC's. These have the capability to stream video over cat5e to "Media Extenders" (a box of tricks that sits between the LAN and your TV in the bedroom). Eventually this should allow you to watch anything connected to the PC (recorded programs, DVD, TV over the LAN). If that's too complicated to worry about just install two or three Cat5e cables to each room from  central hub and you should be reasonably future proof.

TLC have a Cat5e cable tester for GBP£23 plus vat

Lurch /  CWatters - Thanks for the info - it's great stuff, now i've got lots to think about Smiley  The home networking sounds good, but too advanced for my needs, i think im going to go for the loft type box.  2 questions - TVs -on the diagram Lurch posted there is an earth stud ??? "http://www.tvlink.co.uk/LB4%20COLOUR.jpg  where does that go.

phone- If i run 2 cat 5 cables from each phone point to a central location, but for the time being just use 1 cable and connect them all to a phone junction box, and then run a cable from the BT socket to this junction box. will that work, and leave me with some options in the future with regard to networking?
Thanks again.

Er, to earth. Wink I generally bond them to the earth terminal in the socket suplying the equipment.

Yes, that would work fine. Depending how many cables you have you may struggle with just the one junction box. IDC terminals are a bit hit and miss on anything over 2\3 cables. Might be better of just stripping the cables and using screw terminals.
