porch...again!
Aug 28th, 2005, 5:15pm

might actuly do it this time....
intend to be brick low level wall with door in the middle and UPVC windows all round from hereup to roof height, which id like to be pitched and tiled to match the house

is this right?

1, measure out for foundations
2,dig foundations - 18 inches deep do? typical soil with clay a couple of meters down probrably

3, pour cement - 6:1 the right mix?

4, build wall up to about a meter high(block inside or duel brick?)

5, then on top of this its probrably going to be UPVC + upvc door ofcourse!

6 let chippy / glazing company fit the upvc windows and roof structure

couple of questions....

1. wall may go over the services to the house, does this need a duct/lintel?
2. the new wall obviously needs to be tied to existing, will this do?

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=41317&ts=45452

3.and throw in plenty of brick ties?

and lastly, does anyware sell packs with the upvc windows and door?

cheers

PMSL jerry - i like it

i think single skin will be best to maximise space, or single skin dry lined/internal skin of timber partition or something? or brick/block cavity wall?

and seriously a meter deep!?

DPC at same height as house i assume, what about the floor within porch? this seems to always be cement uptil an inch below DPC, then some kind of blue plastic sheet pushed down, with the remaning inch layed on this, the edges of this sheet are embeded in the wall at DPC level

right?

cheese! ill start at the bottom and work up...seems sencible!

No, put the roof up first then if it rains you can dig the foundations under cover.

AHHHH see jerry, theres already a shitty roof thing comming out the wall above the door so i can do as you say and take it down when needed  Grin

ya wouldent happen to know the max floor area would ya for dacorum council?

gov says 2 meters square from outside
stevenage council (nearest i can find) say 3 meters
ill ask at the planning office tomorrow in the town but 2meters seems hell of alot smaller than some have on the street!

i think single skin will be best to maximise space, or single skin dry lined/internal skin of timber partition or something? or brick/block cavity wall? Depends how big it all is, porches often are tiny.  Are you going to heat it?

and seriously a meter deep!? Yes as it avoids all potential problems of shrinkage and heave.  Well worth the effort imho

DPC at same height as house i assume, Yes

what about the floor within porch? this seems to always be cement uptil an inch below DPC, then some kind of blue plastic sheet pushed down, with the remaning inch layed on this, the edges of this sheet are embeded in the wall at DPC level  Synthaprufe (+ gritting) is usually easier as you can join into the existing easier. Minimum 50mm screed
right?

Size I don't know.  I assume you're trying to avoid full planning permission?

Ask the council, they may know. lol

Well I got the "plans"

Jeez, how could you get a three year old out of bed to draw them at this time of night  Wink

Anyway:

You need 2 course of bricks from ground level to dpc, not one.

The roof seems to be totally supported by the upvc frames.  Get back to that drawing board unless roofs can levitate in your part of the world........

3.5N blocks.  This means they can support 3.5n per mm².  3.5n = 0.35 kg therefore a block 440 x 100 is 44000 mm² = 15.4 tonne per block.  This should be strong enough.............. (These blocks are suitable for up to three strorey building btw)

Engineering bricks bit overkill, just use any decent brick (except obviously soft reds etc)

Are you keeping up with all this?  Roll Eyes
