roofing question - removing close boarding
Sep 7th, 2005, 7:02am

i have a semi detached victorian property circ 1898 with a welsh slate roof. The roof is close boarded.

I want to strip and re slate (using the existing slates)

I am getting a few estimates for the work. And so far have  been advised of 3 different ways of going about the task!

1. remove the close boarding and felt and baton

2. retain close boarding replacing any rotten boards, breather felt and nail tiles onto close boarding.

3. As 2 but counter batton on top of breather felt (leaving an air gap). however this method has implications as it raises the level of the roof.

I am looking to go along with No1 but would apprecite any comments or advice

cheers

If it was my roof I'd strip the lot off (slates and boards) and felt and batten using breathable felt and 25 x 50 treated batten.

You're supposed to have a ventilated roof so either use breathable felt or provide cross ventilation by another method.

We have been using breathable felt for a few years now, I wouldn't go back to venting any other way personally.
