12V or 230v Smokes
Oct 12th, 2005, 4:38pm

Just a question out of interest.  Which is best when connected to an alarm panel.

I'm wiring an extension, and have to fit smokes, and was wondering what peoples views were on the 12V option wired into the b/alarm panel, as opposed to the 230v option and relay?

I usually use the Texecom Exodus smokes wired directly to the alarm panel.

Don't think there is really much of a difference between either method, except that it's easier to wire 12V smokes into the panel than to wire the zone into the panel and wire mains to the device on another circuit and link it all up etc...

Only thing is, I'm not sure if wiring smokes off the alarm panel on 12V complies with the building regs.

If you are connecting the smokes to the panel, don't forget the tamper loop on the cable.

yeah - not sure on that myself - so I've gone for the 230v option and then wire the relay to the panel......

[/quote]  So to be cheeky -as this is the 1st time i'm going to wire the smokes to the panel -  I assume that i use two cores for the zone then add another two cores into the tamper loop chain? - to be honest i didn't think about adding the smokes to the tamper loop  Embarrassed- I can see that when using 12V you would want this - so you knew there was a problem with the smokes (as there powered by the panel)........ ah ok penny dropping, if you add them to the loop then the alarm panel give's additonal warnings if the smokes are no longer connected. - Cheers Lurch... Thats two this week  Wink

Well, main reason I put the tamper loop in is that it's part of BS4737.

I come to jobs all the time where people seem to think that if the device isn't a PIR then it doesn't need a tamper connection. IT DOES!! It's kind of likened to not connecting the earth in a circuit of pendants, everything works so everyones happy, until something happens.......

What abount  internal speakers??  So many people don't bother with a tamper on these - Is that required??  I always loop the aux tamper to them.

Yes, everything connected to the system should have at least the cable tampered.

If you had bits of it untampered someone could easily cut the cable to your sounders and no-one would be any the wiser when the system is going off.

The clue is in the question, 'tamper', that's what you don't want people to be doing to any parts of the system.

Just for clarification - I do put the tamper loop in for every protective device, contacts, pir's, sounders etc, just that when it came to the smokes, (as they are not really protective devices for security) - i just didn't think of them.  but rest assured they will have the tamper loop now.  cheers  Smiley
