NO DESKTOP ICONS! (Read 5934 times)

Nov 21^st, 2005, 11:48pm OK - So who's nicked all the icons off my desktop and how do I get em back? Just been doing an MS Publisher publication, finished off, closed it down and all my icons have gone! Any help appreciated WIN2KPRO sp4. Ta TT

Reply #1 - Nov 22^nd, 2005, 9:21pm try resizing your desktop to a bigger/smaller size, sometimes the things arent gone they're just off the screen and a re-size normally fixes it, also try right clicking on the desktop and doing arrange by anything(name/date modified etc) see if anything comes back. btk oh in response to your question, i'm pretty sure it was ss.

Hi guys - thanks for the help.

Seems the thing mended itself - I booted up this morning and all the icons loaded!

God knows what happened before!

Any good links to trouble-shooting IE? I go on certain sites and they simply don't display properly.
Resetting screen resolutions etc doesn't make any difference at all.

On some sites I just get short vertical lines where page titles should be, and the only way I can read what they say is to highlight the gap between each set of lines with the curser and read the word in between.

I just wondered if I had disabled some feature or other in IE settings which needs enabling in order to display properly.

If pages are displaying incorrectly in IE then they must be bad! IE is well known for displaying all sorts of crap on the screen and ignoring dreadfully coded sites.

If you want bad sites to display properly then all you can do is contact the dipstick that cobbled the site together, no amount of doing things your end will make it work. Wink

I notice that the site uses javascript for those buttons - perhaps somrthing in your setup is causing a problem with that ?

IE 6.28.........Whatever!

In IE/tools/internet options/advanced/Microsoft VM,
I have Java console unticked (disabled) JIT logging, and JIT compiler for VM disabled.

I disabled these because I was told that Java applets etc were used for hacking and if not needed, should be disabled.

Here's another site which is all over the place - the font size seems to take up half my 17" monitor for one word.

I tried altering the text options under View\text size\large\small\smaller etc but it makes no odds!
